On this day in 1977, superstar music icon Elvis Presley dies in Memphis, TN at his home.  He was 42 years old. The death of the "The King of Rock and Roll" brought legions of mourning fans to Graceland, his mansion in Memphis.
Elvis grew up dirt-poor in Tupelo and Memphis and found work as a truck driver after high school.  When he was 19, he walked into a Memphis recording studio and paid $4 to record a few songs as a present to his mother.  Sam Philips, the owner of Sun Records studio, was intrigued by the rough, soulful quality of his voice and invited Presley back to practice with some local musicians.  After Philips heard Elvis sing the rhythm-and-blues song "That's All Right," which Presley imbued with an accessible country-and-western flavor, he agreed to release the rendition as a single on his label. The recording went to the top of the local charts, and Presley's career was launched.
Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music, with estimated album sales of around 600 million units worldwide.  He was nominated for 14 Grammys and won three, also receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He was elected posthumously into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 as part of its inaugural class.
Elvis had an incredible *149* songs appear on Billboard's Hot 100 Pop Chart in America.  114 Top-40, 40 Top-10, and 18 #1 hits totaling 80 weeks at the top of the charts.  He has also had over 90 charted albums, 10 of them reaching #1. His chart success in other countries was also substantial.
